What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common occurrence where certain spots on the face appear darker than the rest of the skin. While this is usually harmless it can be very frustrating to deal with.

There are 3 main types of hyperpigmentation:

Sunspots (Age spots) – caused by overexposure of sun, creating darkened patches of skin.

Melasma – large brown or gray patches that are triggered by hormonal changes (birth control, pregnancy) or sun overexposure.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark spots/patches that remain after acne, burn, inflammation, or injury.

Vitamin C is great to treat hyperpigmentation because it stops/slows the production of melanin. Meaning that hyperpigmentation won’t get darker, but actually start to brighten up within 4-6 weeks! Vitamin C also evens out the skin tone and boosts sun protection!
