SPF Myths VS Facts

Let’s debunk some SPF myths and reveal the truth…the facts!

MYTH: “SPF causes cancer”

FACT: SPF is a protectant, it is used to protect your skin from harmful UVB rays which in turn is a preventative to skin cancer, it acts as a shield to reflect the rays.  Preventing your skin cells from getting damaged and preventing melanoma and squamous cells.

There is NO scientific evidence to show SPF causing cancer but there IS scientific proof showing how SPF reduces your risk of skin cancer!!

She’s just THAT GIRL!

MYTH: “All SPF leaves a white cast on my skin.”

FACT: The culprit that causes the white cast in most SPF products is Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide, these are the minerals that reflect those harmful rays to protect your skin.

But, some brands have found a way to crush these minerals into nano sized particles so that they don’t leave a white cast but still protect your beautiful skin!  While other brands have gone a different route and done tinted SPF such as ColorScience that doubles as makeup and protection!

MYTH: “If I wear SPF I can’t get tan!”

FACT:  SPF cannot block 100% of UV rays, UVA rays are responsible for the tanning and aging process which penetrate deeper into the skin.

SPF protects our skin from the harmful UVB rays meaning that many standard SPF lotions allow UVA rays through and in turn allow you to still get brown like Beyonce.

MYTH: “I don’t need to wear SPF in the winter.”

FACT: Unfortunately the sun doesn’t care what time of year it is, if it’s cold or hot, those UVB rays will still come through on a rainy day, on a cold day, and on a sunshiny day.  So, you do need to wear SPF daily no matter the weather!

MYTH: “There’s no reason to reapply.”

FACT: You MUST reapply!!!  The minerals that protect you from the sunlight are broken down over time from absorbing/reflecting the sunlight making them less effective over time. So, you must reapply as instructed!

MYTH: “My skin tans easily, I don’t need SPF.”

FACT: Regardless of if you tan amazingly and never or rarely burn or if you have the most fair skin that burns in 5 minutes, SPF should be worn!  Even if you are not physically seeing or feeling the sun burn there is still damage being done to your skin cells that is dangerous!  Damaged skin cells can evolve into melanoma and/or squamous cells.

At the end of the day, isn’t it better to be safe then sorry?  You can still tan with SPF, you just lower your risk of skin cancer, 2026 is the year for healthy skin!  Let’s start healthy habits!
