Dry or Dehydrated?

How to tell the difference and what products you should be using for each.

You’ve heard both, “Your skin is dry!” “Your skin is dehydrated.”

But, do you even know the difference?  Do you have any idea what products help these and what they mean?

Let’s break down each of them:

Dry Skin

Rough, flaky, scaly texture, often itchy.  You  may experience a tight feeling over the skin, cracking (that may lead to bleeding), redness and irritation.

Dry skin is characterized by the lack of sebum (oil) in the skin causing the skin to be flakey and rough.

So many things can cause dry skin, it’s a tricky one

  • Cold and/or dry air
  • Excessive AC or Heating
  • Hot showers, harsh cleansers (strip barrier)
  • In some cases caused by medical conditions (eczema etc. which we are not educated to diagnose and you must seek a medical professional if you suspect it could be such.)

How do we help the dry skin get plump and moisturized again?

  • Moisturize your skin often leading towards more creams that are thicker rather than lightweight gels.
  • Gravitate towards gentle cleansers that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic.
  • Exfoliate 2-3 times a week with a gentle exfoliant.
  • Get a facial every 4-6 weeks to professionally exfoliate and treat your skin.

Dehydrated Skin

Tightness after cleansing, dull complexion or dark circles, fine lines, random and sudden breakouts and congestion (skin overcompensates oil production to make up for loss of water).

Dehydrated Skin is characterized by a lack of water in the skin, not sebum (oil), that makes the skin appear dull and tight.

What caused your skin to be a dried out sponge?

  • UV rays (excessive sun exposure/tanning)
  • Low water intake
  • Overexfoliating Skin
  • Harsh, Stripping Products

How can you rehydrate your dried sponge skin?

  • Try drinking more water to rehydrate your skin
  • Incorporate products with humectants (containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, snail mucin, etc.)
  • Gentle and/or hydrating cleansers
  • Use moisturizer to seal moisture in your skin
