Most think of November as the month of Thanksgiving and prepping for Christmas! However, what a lot of you bubbly beauties may not know is that it is also national healthy skin month, organized by the American Academy of Dermatology (ADD).
What does this mean, exactly? It’s a month long campaign to promote healthy habits for your skin and raise awareness about skin cancer. There are many simple, effective, and affordable ways to promote healthy habits for your skin to give you not only a strong barrier, but could potentially save your life as well.
One of the easiest ways to promote a healthy skin barrier is to wash your face regularly. Starting off with a simple routine can go a long way. A gentle cleanser that targets your specific concerns is the best way to go. Whether you’re dry, oily, acneic, or completely normal, it’s important to wash your face off any oils, dirt and makeup. If you aren’t sure what type of cleanser you should use, you can always reach out to our estheticians for guidance. Adding a hydrating moisturizer is next.
Washing your face without following up with a moisturizer can cause excess dryness, irritation, and can lead to further damage to the skin’s barrier. A thick cream is better for those with dry or sensitive skin. A lightweight, water-based moisturizer is great for those with oily to normal skin.
The most important way to provide protection to your skin is to wear SPF. I know, I know, you’ve heard this before. We estheticians promote sunscreen like no other because the risks of skin cancer and other concerns are extremely high. Whether you live in a sunny and 75 degree climate, or a cloudy, snowy, always 50’s climate, the sun’s UV rays are still penetrating and doing more damage than you know. Wearing an SPF of 30 or higher can aid in protecting the skin from causing wrinkles, dryness, sun spots, and worst of all, cancer.
Every year, more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer. Of those 100,000 people, 10,000 would likely die from skin cancer. That is 1 in every group of 10 people. Wearing SPF can quite literally save your life. If you or someone you know is concerned about potential skin cancer, please reach out to a local dermatologist, who can get you in for skin checks.
This month, while prepping the turkey and Christmas stockings, be sure to take care of your skin and body as well. Drink plenty of water, exercise, get plenty of sleep, and try to find ways to limit stress. These are just as important for your skin as it is for your overall health and wellness. By washing your face, moisturizing, and wearing SPF, you are already contributing to a healthy barrier.
Happy National Healthy Skin Month! Stay warm and stay safe this week, from our staff at Bubbly to you.
